Travel = stories

Something you can fill the jar.

August 11, 2018 is a memorable one. Aside from Sandro's day because he gave us cupcakes lol, it's the day where I'm gonna leaving my country just to become part of the SEA Teacher Project to teach outside of my country. I’m so excited to travel on my own and it is not hard on my part because I have my companion from the other school in the same city where I’m studying in going to our destination - Indonesia. Sandro and Rain became my very first friends in this SEA TEACHER Project. We’re like brother and sisters because we enjoyed waiting in the airport, laughing, eating around the airport and of course… sleeping in the whole flights. When we are there in Adisutjipto Airport, we already contacted the coordinator that we just got landed in Yogyakarta and they’re already waiting with us. As we push our carts with our heavy baggages going out to the airport, we saw the banner of Universitas Mercu Buana Yogyakarta- our receiving University that welcoming us to their place. Ma'am Restu Arini together with her are our buddies; Hasan and Deavy. We ate our breakfast in KFC to satisfy our hunger since we arrived at 7am and we haven't took our breakfast meal. After that they drop us in our designated Boarding houses and we took our rest. Together with me is Deavy, we talked a lot of things and guide me in my place. We find some store that near my boarding house and we bought sim card for me to connect in internet just to contact my family and friends.

Time starts now!

The following week, we had our welcoming ceremony in our receiving university - Unibersitas Mercu Buana Yogyakarta, campus tour in different campuses and took a lot of pictures. The next day, we deployed to our respected host school – Kinderstation Junior High School. Together with me is Pim (my first Thai Friend), Sandro and Rain are also deployed in a different host school. We had our welcoming ceremony and already started our first day of observation. During observation week, all I did is to get along with the teachers and to the students as well. I’m familiarizing their faces and names. I observed the teachers the way they teach and how students behaved. By observing, I formulated strategies to be used in my class, planned what I’m going to discuss, wrote my lesson plan and prepared materials and supplies needed for the class. This is my routine during observation week.

Happy to serve!

Teaching assistant week- also a part of my observation and assist my Cooperating Teacher- Miss Dyara Anggita. She assigned me to teach in two sections; M1 and M2 which is also her class in Social Economics. I helped her and the other teachers in Kinderstation Junior High School during their class. They gave me such tasks to be done and attended a meeting for their upcoming Leadership Camp and Exit point. I assisted my students in times they need helped when there are so many upcoming activities. Helped in guiding my students and learned during our Field trip in AMIKOM University.

It’s my time to Shine!

This is my practicum week where I’ll be the one to handle the class. As a daily routine in this week, I prepared my lesson plan and I’m open for the suggestion and revision from my cooperating teacher, preparing my instructional materials night before my class, woke up early, went to school on time, attended their flag ceremony, arranged the classroom setting and started my class that depends on my schedule.

See you again!

Last week in Indonesia. We had our Exit Point in Kinderstation Junior High School as a culminating activity of what students have learned throughout the unit. We prepared a lot of things and enjoy the practicum day together with the teachers and my students. The next day is our farewell ceremony in Kinderstation Junior High School- that’s a bit sad story huhuhu.
Pim and I went to KJH to attend out farewell ceremony. I went to my classroom and my cooperating teacher gathered all the students in one classroom just for me to have a farewell speech to all the students. I really felt sad at that time where I cannot utter a word. When I gave my speech, I saw one of my student crying and she hugged me and said “Miss Sabel, please stay.”, “Miss stay longer here.” What really touches my heart is that I never thought I could leave to someone’s heart. She gave me letter as a remembrance from her I embraced all the hugs from my students. I received gift also from Miss Dyara. After that moment, I finally said goodby to my student. Went downstairs with Pim and attend the ceremony. I gave also a speech in front of the Director of the school and other teachers. Tears are all coming out. Huhuhu So sad. I don’t really like goodbyes but we have to.

I woke up sad the next morning. I remember Miss Dyara said “It feels weird here seeing you not coming here.” And it really feels weird also for me not coming to the school. But as the time goes by, we prepared ourselves together with Sandro, Rain and Pim for our Farewell Ceremony in UMBY. We had our practice in our cultural performance and an Indonesian song. I was tasked also to give a farewell speech in behalf of the SEA Teacher Participants.

Woke up early and ready myself for the occasion. I wore my cultural attire that I brought from the Philippines. Got there in UMBY together with Pim and our buddies. We went to the room where we can saw Sandro and Rain had their makeup. Same with me, they put something just to brighten up my face even though my heart starts to cry and to make me presentable in front of other people. The ceremony had already started, they gave their speeches, my farewell speech, performed our cultural dances and we sang an Indonesion song “Sayang” all together. There it goes, Mixed emotions. I do not know what to express my feelings at that time. At night, we decided to sleep over in Bu Restu’s House and hang out together.

The next day, we decided to buy some stuffs and remembrance in Malioboro. And decided to have a farewell hangout together all of our Buddies and SEA Teacher Participants. Sad night for all of us. We were all crying, singing, eating and telling stories. That was our last night in Yogyakarta.

We need to because it is bound to happen.

"Goodbyes are not yet written because we are looking forward seeing each other again."

September 8, 2018- The day we left Yogyakarta. When the airplane started to run, I closed my eyes and it flashed back all what happened in the whole month experience. Tears rolled down on my face. All I did was crying in my first flight going back to Jakarta. But we made our day as fun as we are just to forget what we had really felt. When I got back in the Philippines I can’t move on for a week. There is still grief inside of me but we know that time heals. I recovered myself in sadness. I just find the SEA Teacher that really captures and engraved all the memories in my heart.

 Gratitude.

I’m really thankful to the Man up there who gave me this opportunity-a blessing from Him. Thank you, Lord. You are Great!

To my family who supported me in financial aspect, to the Dean who pushes me to move forward and to my Coordinator who helped me to make this possible.

A BIG THANK YOU TO ALL OF YOU!

My favorite thought about Jay Shetty “At first, travel leaves you speechless and it turns out you to a storyteller.”
